Lake Pertobe Wildlife and Tourism Development Scheme
Lake Pertobe was once an ephemeral wetland, a part of the greater Merri River floodplain. During the 1960’s salt water was pumped into the lake and used for water skiing. In 1968 the lake dried up and became unusable.
The formation of Lake Pertobe as it appears today, occurred between 1974 and 1980. Edward “Johnny” Johnson MBE, Warrnambool Civil Engineer 1950-1070, had a vision to retain and protect the area of special significance for the preservation of bird-life on the lake and create a recreational lake and parkland surround in the remaining area for the benefit of residents and tourists.
The wetland was dredged, machinery brought in to form islands and canals. Bridges built to connect these areas and then mass plantings occurred to vegetate the area. Two water features and play equipment were constructed next. The toy boat pond next to the current maze and the reflection pond to the west of the park. Both these water features use groundwater to fill them, with excess water draining into the lake.
Over the coming year’s further playground equipment and barbecue facilities have been added and upgraded as funding became available.
